Things to do in Malibu - Eat, Stay & Play

“Things to do in Malibu”

Visiting the star-studded enclave where the mountains meet the sea in sunny southern California anytime soon? Here’s a few insider tips provided by true locals only.

Malibu is a sleepy town. There’s tons to do during the day, from surfing, kite surfing, scuba diving, swimming, beach going, hiking, shopping, star watching, relaxing, sunbathing, playing tennis, golf (at the Malibu golf course), dining, jogging, horse riding, hang gliding, to biking. But when the sun goes down, so too does the activities. There’s a noticeable down time, when the area goes quiet just after sundown. Most of the beach goers who came from inland Los Angeles, are tailights while the elite residences either travel into Hollywood for some nightlife or stay shacked within their well heeled abodes.

All is not lost however. There are some high end, great restaurants tucked in the hills—just make sure you go early. Although great food and ambiance, they close early. There is also a few bars, a Greek eatery and bar where people really let their guard down and a sawdust, more down and dirty bar where local bands (which sometimes includes some pretty big numbers) jump on stage.

There are also some pretty unique natural occurrences that happen at night in Malibu. The running of the Grunnion occurs on nights with full moons. This is where a typical southern California fish snake their frisky bodies up on to shore to mate. You’ll witness thousands of these gleaming little guys, just be careful where you walk.

Another great idea is to stage a bonfire at the beach. Nothing beats sitting on the warm sand hours after the sun goes down under the starlit sky. Be adventurous and jump into the cold Pacific while you’re at it. Nothing says great vacation like a night swim off the California coast. Just make sure to notice the signs about where and where you cannot stage bonfires. Malibu is nothing if not fragile when it comes to fire season.
