Dubai Waterfront

The Dubai Waterfront is proposed to become the largest waterfront and largest man-made development in the world. The project is a conglomeration of canals and artificial islands; it will occupy the last remaining Persian Gulf coastline of Dubai, the most populous emirate of the United Arab Emirates. It will consist of a series of zones with mixed use including commercial, residential, resort, and amenity areas. The vision of the project is "to create a world-class destination for residents, visitors and businesses in the world's fastest growing city".

Run by the Dubai Waterfront Company, the project is open to foreign investment with its real estate developer, Nakheel Properties, owning a 51% stake. The artificial islands, shaped in an arc, will produce a shelter around the The Palm, Jebel Ali, one of the three Palm Islands, the largest artificial islands (shaped like palm trees) in the world also being constructed by Nakheel Properties. The project will also feature a 75 kilometer Arabian Canal that will run from the coast into the desert and a major harbor.

The Dubai Waterfront will extend Dubai's coastline by 820 kilometers, twelve times the length of its current coastline. It will consist of 440 square kilometers of water and land developments, an area seven times the size of Manhattan, New York in the United States. It is expected to house 400,000 people.

Located near to the new Dubai World Central International Airport, and with direct access to Sheikh Zayed Road, Jebel Ali Freezone and Abu Dhabi, the city will be fully accessible on a local and international scale.

The project will feature hundreds of waterfront developments and planned communities. It will consist of 10 key areas including Madinat Al Arab , which is expected to become the new downtown and central business district of Dubai. Madinat Al Arab has been carefully crafted and developed by an international consortium of highly regarded architects, planners and urban developers. It will be anchored by Al Burj, which when completed is expected to be 700 meters to one kilometer in height, making it one of the world's tallest buildings. Madinat Al Arab will feature resorts, retail, commercial spaces, public spaces, a broad mix of residencies and an integrated transport system including light rail and a sophisticated road network.

Dubai Airport

Dubai International Airport is the international airport serving Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates. The airport is a hub to Dubai's international airline, Emirates. In 2005, the airport served 24.7 million passengers. Dubai International Airport will be complemented by Dubai World Central International Airport, a new 140 km² airport that will help handle the influx of travelers well into the future.

Dubai International Airport was conceived in 1959, when Sheik Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum first ordered construction. It was inaugurated in 1960 with DC-3 plane flights and was home to nine airlines. Today, the airport handles all kinds of jets. Part of the airport's Terminal 3 collapsed on September 28, 2004 during the construction phase. The terminal was designed by French architect Paul Andreu. Andreu also designed Terminal 2E at Paris' Charles de Gaulle International Airport, which had part of the structure collapse on May 23, 2004.

The Airport is currently undergoing a major expansion with the construction of Terminal 3 and new 60 meter wide and longer runway. This expansion will make the Airport fully Airbus A380 compatible. The Airport will also undergo an expansion to allow two stations of the Green Line of the Dubai Metro to be built within the complex. One station will be constructed in Terminal 1 and the other in Terminal 3. The Metro system is not expected to be fully operational until 2012.

Dubai International Airport is the home to Dubai Duty Free, which is regarded as the best Duty free in the world. Because of the many stores in the airport, it is considered a major place to buy duty free goods in that country, which is in turn considered a duty free shopping heaven, by many. Prices actually are higher than in many other airports.

High standard International Cuisine is available in the city’s many restaurants and if you are looking for lively evening entertainment there are numerous night clubs around the city. Some of the clubs attract even international DJs. Dubai also welcomes international touring Singing & Entertainment Acts which cater to all tastes and ages…from traditional theatre groups (Chicago, Mamma Mia) to ballet (Nutcracker), from opera to international rock and pop bands (Elton John, Shakira, 50 Cents) - all are regular visitors.

Shopping in Dubai is amazing, convenient and very practical. With huge shopping malls offering every imaginable brand in clothing, furniture and accessories, everything you can ever dream of is in one place. In addition, The Dubai Shopping Festival is now a world famous annual event but for those who can’t wait for January to come round again never fear Dubai is the shopping capital of the world. Dubai also offers its visitors an amazing and unique Desert Experience. Indeed, a 4x4 Desert Safari is another great tourist activity but be sure to take a camera to capture the stunning sunset, the vibrant colors and the dramatically changing aspect of the desert as the sun goes down and the moon rises.

For families Dubai has several venues to offer like Wild Wadi Water Park which is the worlds most advanced and innovative Water Theme Park and a water theme park like no other you will have ever experienced. Other theme parks are under development like Paramount and Universal Studios theme parks that will surely have amazing rides matching all the Disney Theme Parks.

It wasn't so long ago when Dubai was frequently referred to as one of the world's best-kept Golfing secrets by golf travel publications and tourism brochures. Now, of, course it is hosting in February every year, one of the biggest and best golf tournaments in the world, the Dubai Desert Classic. The golf courses are, of course, famous in their own right. The Emirates Golf Club hosts the Dubai Desert Classic. The Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, to give it its full title, also provides every possible comfort.

As the popularity of Dubai as a golfing destination grows, more golf courses are opening up every year just to cater for the demand. Colin Montgomerie, the Desert Course in Arabian Ranches, and the Four Seasons Golf Club (known as Al Badia) behind Dubai Festival City recently opened. More Golf Courses are set to open. Indeed, in Victory Heights (the biggest development in Dubai Sports City) there will be an 18 holes golf course designed by champion Ernie Els.

Also Jumeirah Golf Estates will have four golf courses (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water) paying tribute to the power of nature, each employing the distinctive characteristics of its own surroundings to deliver a unique challenge. The golf courses are always in immaculate condition, and spectacular to the eye. The world’s leading golf players love coming to Dubai and it’s easy to see why. In short, for the ultimate in complete golfing luxury and over-indulgence, this is just the place.

As an integral part of the culture of Dubai, Horse Back Riding is one of the most preferred things to do in Dubai. For tourists, horse riding in Dubai is sheer excitement and adventure. This is mainly due to the presence of numerous professional riding stables and equestrian centers. No wonder, horse lovers all over the world consider it to be a privilege to ride a horse in this beautiful city. Horse riding is also widely followed as a professional sport. Luring a huge number of spectators, the horse races of Dubai have attained international recognition over time. In fact, the Dubai World Cup is considered to be the richest race in the sport. The world's top notch jockeys come here with their splendid horses every year (end of March) for this event. The track used for Dubai World Cup is truly world-class, and the racecourse caters to international standards of telecasting and other facilities.

We know Dubai is a desert city, and never experiences snow. Nonetheless, snow skiing in Dubai is a very plausible recreational option for tourists thanks to Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East. Offering an artificial snow setting for skiers, and snowboarders, this resort has accentuated the growth of tourism by luring thousands of skiing lovers from world over. Skiing in Dubai has now become a pastime for both locals and tourists alike. A unique mountain-themed attraction in the Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai has changed the preconceived notions related to skiing in Dubai.

The world's third-largest indoor ski slope, it is 85 meters in height and covers a total area of 22,500 square meters. Providing skiers with 6000 tons of real snow all through the year, this place maintains a constant -1º to -2º C, even as temperatures outside the resort are soaring. With a capacity of 1,500 visitors, Ski Dubai has become one of the most-visited attractions. In fact, it is promoted as the 'coolest thing to do in Dubai'. Ski Dubai provides all requisite equipment required for skiing in Dubai. Clothing, ski boards, and even professional guidance are easily available here.

Do not miss the thrill of Desert Skiing or Sand Boarding in Dubai when you visit this beautiful city. Desert skiing is a common feature in Desert Safaris. While you traverse the vast sandy expanse, you'll come across numerous dunes. These red dunes are the best places to enjoy desert skiing. Desert skiing in Dubai gives you the opportunity of experiencing the magic of the desert in a unique way. Hatta is the area that offers lot of sand ski options to tourists. Burj Dubai tower

After a disastrous end to 2009 for Dubai investors, the sun-soaked emirate will be attracting attention for all the right reasons today as it officially opens the world's tallest building.

The Burj Dubai tower, a needle-shaped skyscraper which stands more than 800 metres tall and can be seen from 95 kilometres away, will stand as a gleaming testament to Dubai's glory days before the recession ground its construction industry to a halt.

Boasting the world's first Armani hotel on the bottom floors, the Burj Dubai Tower also houses 900 Dubai residences, 37 floors of office space, a fine dining restaurant and an observation deck.

The structure easily surpasses its closest rivals, the KVLY-TV mast in Blanchard in North Dakota, U.S, which measures a lofty 628 metres-high and the Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower in China, which falls short at 610 metres.

The Burj Dubai - literally meaning 'Tower Dubai' - brings records galore to the UAE. As well as being the tallest building in the world, it also has the most stories and highest occupied floor of any building in the world, and ranks as the world's tallest structure. Visitors can look out from the highest observation deck in the world on the 124th floor.

"We weren't sure how high we could go," said Bill Baker, the building's structural engineer. "It was kind of an exploration...a learning experience."

The tower itself is reported to have cost $1.5 billion  - £925 million - and the owners report that nearly 100 per cent of the apartments are sold out. However, the majority of the building's office space has not been taken up and the hotel is not actually finished yet.

Nevertheless, the celebratory opening will take place today with Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al-Maktoum attending the event. The ceremony will be followed by a spectacular laser and firework display.

From tomorrow visitors will be able to experience a taste of the high life by ascending to the 124th floor in the longest lifts in the world which will take two minutes to travel 504 metres.

Beyond the tower's offerings, the Armani Hotel itself will have eight restaurants, a spa, a luxury chocolate shop and florists as well as an Armani galleria.

But those who cannot afford to stay in rooms designed by Giorgio himself can get a taste of glamour by buying a ticket for the observation deck which will be open from this month.

Strangely, the owners of Burj Dubai, Emaar Properties PJSC, do not want the public to know its exact height, specifying only that it is above 800 metres.

"It's still a secret," said William Baker of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP, the tower's structural engineer.

"The client will only let us say it's more than 800 metres tall. It's part of the mystique of the project."

Despite not giving away its exact height, the owners still offer enough facts and figures to make the mind boggle.

The tower's glass and steel exterior would apparently cover 17 football fields if laid out flat and will take some poor workers between six and eight weeks to clean.

The concrete used in the core of the building could build a pavement 1,283 miles long and the cooling system produces enough condensation to fill 20 Olympic swimming pools a year. It's a good thing those eco-conscious developers will be using the waste to water the grounds.

Work on the Burj Dubai began in 2004 and continued rapidly. At times, new floors were being added almost every three days, reflecting Dubai's raging push to reshape itself over a few years from a small-time desert outpost into a cosmopolitan urban giant packed with skyscrapers.

By January 2007, thousands of laborers, many of them brought in on temporary contracts from India, had completed 100 stories.

To ensure the tower doesn't twist or break during bad weather, it is built in a Y-shape, with three 'wings' evenly distributing the building's weight.

The Palm Dubai

The Palm Islands in Dubai are the three largest artificial islands in the world, being constructed by Nakheel Properties in the United Arab Emirates. Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent, and will have residential communities and resorts built upon them. It is possible to make these islands due to the wide continental shelf off the Dubai coast, and the relatively shallow depth of the Persian Gulf.

The islands were designed as part of the plan to develop tourism in Dubai against the eventual depletion of the emirate's oil reserves, which are expected to be depleted in the second decade of the 21st century. The goal is to become one of the biggest areas in the world for tourism as a means of diversifying the economy.

Two of the islands—The Palm, Jumeirah, and The Palm, Deira—will be built by the Dutch company Van Oord Dredging from 80,000,000 m³ of sea bottom dredged from the approach channel. The Palm, Jebel Ali is being built by Jan De Nul.

The Palm Islands are technically artificial peninsulas constructed of sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf, which is conveniently narrow and shallow. The sand is sprayed by the dredging ships, which are guided by GPS, onto the required area in a process known as rainbowing. The outer edge of each Palm's encircling crescent is a huge breakwater constructed of carefully placed rocks that were collected by blasting.

Dutch scientists, because of their experience with changes made to the land in their own nation, were called in to study the area and perfect plans to make sure the Palms would remain intact over time and through storms. However, the owners refused to wait until the investigation was complete before ordering construction. After the Palm had been constructed, the Dutch scientists discovered that the tide did not reach all the way around the crescent with sufficient force to prevent stagnation of the water; it would become a haven for algae and mosquitos. The crescent was modified with two extra channels, each about a quarter of the way from either end. These channels allow greater scope for the action of the tide, and thus the water inside the Palm's boundary is replaced about every two weeks.
