Nokia launched first windows based smartphone

Global handset maker Nokia, along with Microsoft, on Monday announced the launch of its first smartphone based on the Windows operating system in the Indian market.

The move is expected to boost Nokia’s presence in the smartphone market, which has seen the company lose market share steadily.

The phones — Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 — have been priced at about $580 and $380 globally, respectively, and would be available in the retail market from mid-December.

Nokia would do away with the Symbian platform in the coming years, and replace it with the Windows operating system in all its smartphones, said Nokia India Managing Director, D Shivakumar. “The success of any phone in India is decided within three-four weeks of its launch, and we are confident that this is a winner, since we have already trained about 12,500 distributors, retailers and priority dealers who can sell Nokia Windows phone to smartphone buyers,” Shivakumar said.

The smartphone market, expected to account for 20 percent of the total handset market in value terms, has become a hotbed for handset vendors. Nokia unveiled its smartphone nearly a week
ahead of Apple, which is rumoured to launch the iPhone 4S in India on November 24.

The Finnish handset company expects the smartphone market in India to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 50 per cent in 2010-15, owing to 3G services and increased data usage. Globally, Nokia fell to No. 3 slot in the smartphone market, behind Samsung and Apple, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics. The company, however, continues to account for almost 30 per cent of market share in India.

For Microsoft, the smartphone platform presents a huge opportunity to tap theconsumer market. With a large presence in the government and education sectors in India, Microsoft is confident that the Windows phone would become the second-most popular smartphone operating system by 2015.

While rivals Samsung and HTC already have smartphones on the Windows platform, Bhaskar Pramanik, chairman, Microsoft India, said, “What matters is the hardware and software integration. We have worked closely with Nokia to offer a unique user experience to users of the Lumia range of devices.”

Microsoft Windows operating system is expected to grow at 123 per cent until 2015 in the global market. Currently, in India, the operating system has less than one per cent market share, according to StatCounter data.

“It is more important for Nokia to provide consumers a strong experience in targeted markets and listen to consumer feedback to improve and further differentiate future Windows smartphone releases, than it is to quickly ramp volume of its initial Windows launch,” say analysts at
Canaccord.

The new Lumia range has the internet explorer 9 browser and in-built social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter embedded into the operating system. The range also boasts of applications such as Nokia Maps and Drive, which would have personal navigation devices in 50
languages, including Hindi. The company would offer maps of 100 countries and 750 cities across India free on all Nokia Lumia devices. Nokia Music and the MixRadio, a free global mobile music streaming application, would also be available. These services would be made available in India in
the first half of 2012.

Nokia would also provide 750 local applications by nearly 1,000 Indian developers on the Lumia device. The device has already been launched in Europe.

Nokia N9 not available in India, U.S., U.K. and Africa

Nokia has a strong base in India and some African nations. Countries such as the U.S. and the U.K. haven't had a Nokia fan base since some time now (with Android and iOS being the possible culprits). It is not a surprise, because developing nations have always been more receptive to Nokia handsets, mainly because of the strong build quality, and trust with the company. But now, it seems like Nokia has put all of the above countries in its low priority list. The Nokia N9 availability page doesn't have India, U.S., U.K., or any of the African nations. This news comes as a shocker to many, since Nokia has had a very strong hold in these markets.

The Nokia N9

The Nokia N9

The absence of countries such as the United States is understandable, because Nokia has no carrier support for its devices yet, and it could take some time till Nokia gets to an agreement with the carriers in the U.S. And as far as India is concerned, the company may follow the strategy it followed while launching the N900, which was made available in the Indian market, a few months after other countries got it.

There is still some confusion over the launch of the Nokia N9. Some reports claim that the device could be launched within a month from now, while others speculate that it could take longer. Either way, excited fans in the country will have to be content with videos and photos till it's made available. Although it is hoped that Nokia could add a bunch of countries to that list within a few days. But until then it's disappointment all over. Users can keep an eye on the availability page over at Nokia.

These countries will be getting the phone first: Austria, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, UAE, and Vietnam.

Nokia handset's history

Mobira Senator

The Mobira Senator was released in 1982 and is seen as one of the first true mobile phones. Nokia's telecommunications branch originally existed as a merger between themselves and Salora OY. The two companies released handsets under the name Mobira. It was not until 1989 that Nokia began manufacturing phones under its own name.

Nokia 2110

The Nokia 2110 was the first of the company's mobile phones to carry their signature ringtone, which was later made famous by Dom Joly's Trigger Happy TV antics.

Nokia 8110

The Nokia 8110, one of the original 'slider' phones, was released in 1996 to great acclaim. For the time it provided a powerful and fast mobile phone with innovative design. It also featured in the original Matrix movie.

Nokia 1100

An incredibly simple and easy to produce handset. The Nokia 1100 remains the biggest-selling mobile phone of all time. Aimed at developing countries, it brought mobile communications to many people who originally could not afford it.

Nokia 3310

The 3310 succeeded the incredibly popular 3210 and with it brought improved versions of Nokia's highly addictive mobile phone games. Snake 2, in particular, brought huge popularity to the phone.

Nokia N95

Nokia has produced some fairly impressive smart phones over the years. The N95 in particular was powerful and cutting edge for the time. It provided a good quality camera as well as many of the features we now take for granted in current iOS and Android powered smartphones.

Nokia X6

The X6 became Nokia's flagship music-orientated phone back in 2009. The phone supported social network access and Nokia's Ovi maps. It also came in two different version, one containing an 8GB hard drive and another with a larger 16GB memory.

Nokia N8

This soon released Symbian powered smart phone is what Nokia hopes will catapult their company back into the mobile phone manufacturer leaderboards. It comes crammed with features including a powerful 12 megapixel camera and clever connectivity, including HDMI and Dolby Digital Plus sound

Nokia unveils N9 ‘all-screen’ phone

New N9 phone, the long-awaited successor to Nokia’s N8, is finally unveiled in Singapore – but no sign of new Windows Phone handsets yet

Nokai's new N9 handset

Nokai's new N9 handset

Troubled smartphone giant Nokia has unveiled a range of new handsets including the company’s new flagship device, the N9. Featuring an ‘all-screen’ design, the phone replaces a home button with a universal ‘swipe’ gesture that takes users back to the devices main screen from wherever they are in its operating system.

Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia's head of Design, said, “The details that make the Nokia N9 unique - the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers - will evolve in future Nokia products."

The company, has not yet, however, demonstrated any of the long-awaited Windows Phone handsets that it says it will release by the end of the year. Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop said “Earlier this year, we outlined a comprehensive strategy to change our course. Innovation is at the heart of our strategy, and today we took important steps to demonstrate a new pace of innovation at Nokia. It's the beginning of a new era for Nokia."

Earlier this month Nokia announced significantly reduced profits and operating margins, which sent its share prices further down.

The company also released affordable models called the C2-02, C2-03 and C2-06 using Symbian Series 40. They included dual and single-sim options, which are popular in emerging markets where Nokia is still hugely popular, and both touch screen and keypad options. They are also the first Nokia handset to feature mapping with Symbian Series 40, which the company hopes will also appeal to customers in the developing world.

Infosys, Tata beat Google, Facebook, Nokia to emerge as top brands in India

Infosys
IT giant Infosys and salt-to-software conglomerate Tata have emerged as the top 2 brands in India, beating global majors like Google, Nokia and Facebook, in a new index.

According to TLG's index of emerging market 'Thought Leaders', seven out of the top ten brands in India were indigenous firms.

TLG, in partnership with international research consultancy firm GlobeScan, launched the index wherein government ministers, directors of blue chip companies and newspaper editors were asked to identify corporate brands with the power to change the attitudes and behaviour of consumers, employees or politicians -- defined as " Thought Leaders".

The list of top 20 firms was peppered with Indian brands including Larsen & Toubro (5th), State Bank of India (7th), Life Insurance Corporation of India (12th), Bharti Airtel (13th), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (14th), Aditya Birla Group (15th), The Oberoi Group (16th), HDFC Bank (17th), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (18th) and Ranbaxy Laboratories (19th).

"... Absence of many 'western' major brands from the top 20 may concern CEOs who are trying to crack the BRICs. They need to refocus their energies on telling their leadership story," TLG founder Malcolm Gooderham said.

The top 10 features two joint ventures between local and overseas companies. The JVs are Maruti-Suzuki (4th) and Hindustan Unilever (9th).

Commenting on the findings, GlobeScan Research director Oliver Martin said, "As the public's faith in corporate leadership is declining in India, companies must excel in business innovation and progressive CSR to retain a Thought Leadership position."

The top-ranked foreign firm is Google, which enters the index at number three, followed by Nokia at sixth rank and Facebook at eighth position.

"Western firms that succeed (Google, Nokia and Facebook) are those that adapt their models to local conditions, or ones that form JVs with locals in the driving seat ( Suzuki, Unilever)," the report said.

Google, through its YouTube platform, streams live Indian Premier League cricket matches, while Facebook offers mobile access for a special rate of 1 rupee a day.

Interestingly, Apple, which leads the pack in Britain and America, failed to corner a place for itself in the top 20 list in India. Apple's failure to adapt its business model to local tastes and budgets was vastly responsible for its inability to crack India.

"Indian consumers can buy a new Tata Nano car for the same price as three Apple iPhones," the report said.

Nokia C2-03: Nokia announces 'new era', launches four new phones

Mobile phone-maker Nokia today announced the "beginning of a new era" for the company with the launch of four new mobile phones, including a full-screen touch-based smartphone.

"Earlier this year, we outlined a comprehensive strategy to change our course," said Stephen Elop, the president and CEO of Nokia.

"Innovation is at the heart of our strategy and today we took important steps to demonstrate a new pace of innovation at Nokia. It's the beginning of a new era for Nokia," he added.

Nokia introduced two dual SIM phone Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06 and a single sim phone, Nokia C2-02.

All three models are built on the Symbian operating system S 40.

Nokia today announced its own internet browser and these phones have the Nokia browser loaded on it.

"Nokia browser can compress data size up to 90 per cent. All phones to be shipped in future will Nokia browser loaded on them," Nokia Executive Vice-President, Mobile Phones, Mary McDowell said.

Nokia which has tied up with Microsoft for launching mobile phones on the Windows platform, restated its commitment to Symbian.

"This July, Nokia will start shipping Nokia N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with the new Symbian Anna software update," Elop said.

By the end of August, existing owners of these devices can also download Symbian Anna.

Elop added that over the next 12 months, Nokia plans to launch up to 10 new Symbian-based smartphones in the market.

Nokia also revealed its latest smartphone, the Nokia N9, an all-screen device that will allow user to navigate the phone by swiping on the screen.
