Travel by car and nowadays you’ll pay more for your gas than ever before. With gas prices on the rise, there’s no telling when that will come down to happy 1950’s levels. Sure, as long as you take the scenic route, you’ll see things you’d miss while sitting on your couch. But how different is downtown Oklahoma than downtown Memphis? There’s a few more Hard Rock Cafés in Memphis and a few more McDonald’s in Oklahoma. Save yourself the fuel.
Travel by plane and you’ll go further than you would any other way. Get clear across the world in 23 hours and two layovers. Subject yourself to the horrors of locking your soul within a 200 foot metallic missile, light some high octane fuel and blast it out from behind you and hang on. Sure, they say air travel is the safest way to go, but tell that to the person falling from 45,000 feet to their demise. Not a great way to go.
Travel by backpack and you probably won’t get as far as by plane. Seems like simple math but is it true? Or do we actually travel farther and see more when we travel by backpack? Are we more in touch with nature itself when we travel by backpack? Do we avoid the stinky airport lounges, the tiny chair, the gas bill, the sea sickness, the tourists, the malls and the state rooms by traveling by backpack?
Next time you’re traveling ask yourself: what is the best way to travel? And maybe, just maybe, you’ll avoid all the 20th century inventions and opt for a real world, old school way to feed the soul. Happy travels.
